UEFA Champions League Preview, March 11 - 19

Champions League preview

The Champions League is due to return in over a week's time. This March, there are games occurring on the 11, 12, 18 and 19 of the month. With the first legs played in the Round of 16 games, it is all to play for.

Atletico Madrid are first up, at home to AC Milan. Atletico took a small 1-0 win in Milan last month, and that away goal will be vital to their match against the Rossoneri this time around. In what many would argue is Atletico's best season ever, they are almost certain to win at 1.44. If Milan pull off a victory though, it will pay-out favourable odds of 6.50, in what is one of the Round of 16's tastiest ties.

FC Bayern are the favourite to lift the trophy, and their 2-0 away win over Arsenal has put them in excellent stead. Bayern are going to walk it, though you could still pocket 5.50 to the pound, if Arsenal manage to at least hold them to a draw (even if they don't go through to the next round). The same story is true of Manchester City. Although FC Barca picked up a commanding 2-0 win at the Etihad last month, City only have to draw for you to pick up 4.33 to the pound. Barcelona will go through regardless.

Placing your bets on Bayer Leverkusen to beat Paris-Saint Germain, Galatasaray to beat Chelsea, Schalke to beat Real Madrid, or Zenit to beat Borussia Dortmund is rather foolish. None of those teams are likely to prosper in the away ties, especially after the results of the first legs. No matter how appetising a 17.00 pay-out looks for Schalke 04 to win at the Bernanbeu against an in-form Real Madrid, it won't happen. In Gelsenkirchen, Real stuffed six away goals past Schalke. That tie is over.

So what of Manchester United? They are currently losing 2-0 to Olympiakos on aggregate. Can the Red Devils turn it around at Old Trafford? On paper, you would say yes, of course they can. United are known for making miraculous comebacks, just not this season. If the Red Devils were to score 2 or 3 they could easily win the tie. But if they were to concede just one goal to Olympiakos, they would need to score at least 4 goals to go through. This, against a time who they failed to register a single chance against in the first leg, seems incredibly unlikely. So, Olympiakos to nick the win pays out 7.00, though it is far more likely that the Greek Champions will settle for a draw, and at odds of 4.33 that isn't a bad bet. United at 1.44 favourites to win the tie, even if they don't go through.
