English Premier League Preview, February 22 - 23
Published: February 20, 2014The Premier League returns to action this weekend, after last weekend's break for FA Cup action, and what a weekend it is shaping up to be. Taking a general look at all the major clashes in the top flight, let's start with the one that is on everybody's mind; Chelsea versus Everton at Stamford Bridge.
Chelsea are currently top of the table, exactly where Jose Mourinho wants them to be. The Blues are not going to have an easy time of it, against a Toffees side that has performed impeccably well under new manager, Roberto Martinez. You can almost sense that Chelsea (incised by their defeat in the FA Cup to Manchester City), will be hoping to block them out of the race for the title. Expect an all-out Chelsea onslaught, with odds of roughly 4/7 on a Chelsea victory.
Speaking of Manchester City, they travel to Stoke City, as they aim to keep the pressure on Chelsea at the top. Stoke City have not been in terribly good form: losing two, drawing two and winning only one of their last five matches. It is important to note though, that City do have a game in hand on the leaders, so a shock upset here, wouldn't be the worst thing in the world. It will almost certainly not happen though, and free scoring City are likely to walk away with three points, which offers odds of just 1/6. Far better then, to bet on a surprise draw, which offers odds of 6/1.
Manchester United have been having an atrocious season by anybody's standards. Although David Moyes' men put in a resolute performance against Arsenal last week, we've seen this all before. The recovery turns into a landslide. Could this be the ideal time for Crystal Palace to take something off United? After spending big in the transfer window, Palace have won three of their last five, and climbed out the relegation zone. Odds of 19/4 aren't exactly shabby either for Palace to pick up a home win against the Red Devils at Selhurst Park.
Making a quick roundup of the other matches in the top flight this weekend; Arsenal are almost certain to beat Sunderland at the Emirates, but Sunderland have been on great form of late, so could a 9/1 away win be on the cards? Cardiff City and Hull lock horns in their battle for survival, with Cardiff narrow favourites for victory at 8/5.
West Brom are huge favourites to defeat Fulham, however Fulham have a brand new (and successful) manager, so they are an ideal bet to bag an away win at 7/2; whilst West Ham and Southampton is a fair bet, with a Saints win up at 11/8. Liverpool versus Swansea looks as though it'll be a Reds whitewash, but a draw is worth a 9/2 bet just in case. Finally, Newcastle clash with Aston Villa, with a draw at St. James' Park worth a 23/10 bet; and Norwich host high flying Spurs, who are offered dead evens at 1/1. Surely the 11/4 Canaries win, or 12/5 draw are better punts then?
